Wildfire Burns 622 Acres Near Truckee As Helicopter Flies Over Smoke-Filled Canyon
The Floriston Fire burned along the I-80 corridor about nine miles northeast of Truckee after starting at 10:01 a.m. on September 16.
By the evening of September 16, crews had held the fire at 640 acres with 8% containment. A morning update on September 18 revised the fire to 622 acres and 15% contained.
Helicopter footage from September 17 shows smoke filling a steep timbered canyon as pink retardant covers sections of the burned slopes. Green forest remains alongside black and red ground, with a valley and reservoir visible through the haze.
Unified command includes CAL FIRE NEU, CHP, Nevada and Sierra county sheriffs, and the U.S. Forest Service.
Westbound I-80 was closed before reopening at about 7 a.m. on September 18 with traffic control. Evacuation orders and warnings remained in parts of Nevada, Sierra and Washoe counties.
