Floodwater Sweeps Cars Down Village Street as Storm Agneta Hits Rhodes
A raging torrent of brown floodwater swept parked cars down a village street in Archangelos, on the Greek island of Rhodes, at around 1:29 a.m. local time on Monday, November 2.
Footage filmed at night from a balcony shows fast, churning water filling the street from wall to wall. A dark car and a white car are pushed along by the current and pinned against the railings below the building, as the water surges around them under the streetlights.
“Disaster, guys,” X user N_Liviti wrote when sharing the video.
The user said it had rained for 17 hours non-stop. “The volume of water is tremendous,” they wrote. “The whole centre of Archangelos was destroyed. The mountains bring water down from many directions and it gathers at one point where it ends up in the river. This village is surrounded by mountains, like a basin.”
At least 60 vehicles were swept away and dozens of homes and businesses were flooded in Archangelos, where an overflowing river turned streets into torrents, according to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency. The 112 emergency service sent an alert to residents and visitors at about 3:30 a.m., urging them to limit their movements, and schools were closed in four municipal districts.
