Tornado Funnel Hovers Over Kansas Reservoir During Storm Outbreak
X user Kyle Hemmert captured a dark tornado funnel hanging beneath a low storm base over Wilson Lake Wednesday evening as severe storms moved across central Kansas.
The cone-shaped funnel narrows and shifts above the far shore, remaining suspended in the air throughout the outdoor footage. The frames do not show the funnel touching the water or land.
The National Weather Service in Wichita said low-topped supercells produced several tornadoes across Barton, Russell and Lincoln counties that afternoon and evening. Moisture from the remnants of Hurricane Polo was part of the storm setup.
A tornado warning issued at 6:14 p.m. CDT covered northeastern Russell County and northwestern Lincoln County, specifically naming Wilson Lake, Wilson State Park and Sylvan Grove. An earlier warning at 5:51 p.m. confirmed a tornado over Dorrance and also listed Wilson Lake.
Reports indicated tornadoes in Russell County north of Wilson Lake and near Lucas, along with funnels near Sylvan Grove. No damage was reported in Russell County, although some outbuilding damage occurred near the Russell-Barton county line.
