Thousands Of Students March Through Montpellier In Fifth Day Of Youth Protests
Thousands of students and young people marched through the city on 13 October as part of the fifth major demonstration in an ongoing youth mobilization over education and university access.
The demonstration, known as “Acte V,” began at Place Albert 1er in the early afternoon and moved toward the city center. X user SCUM – Montpellier posted footage of the march.
Organizers called for improved study conditions, increased education funding and staffing, higher student grants, and reforms to Parcoursup and selective admissions. They also demanded registration for students who remain without university places and opposed what they described as social and racist selection.
The mobilization began in mid-September and intensified in early October, with campus blockades at several institutions, including Université Paul-Valéry and the Faculty of Sciences. Education unions including FSU, UNSA, FO, CFDT, CGT and SUD supported the call for demonstrations.
Police cleared some occupied campuses and high-school blockades earlier on 13 October. Later in the afternoon, tensions and tear gas were reported near Place de la Comédie after the main march had dispersed.
