Terrifying Tornado Funnel Snakes Down Over Homes as Resident Films in Chile
A tornado funnel snaked down from dark storm clouds above the town of Requínoa in central Chile on Monday, October 26, damaging dozens of homes.
X user Ricardo filmed the twister from a residential street, as the thin grey funnel stretched from the swirling cloud base toward the ground behind rooftops and power lines. “Tornado in Requinoa,” he wrote.
Chile’s weather service classified the tornado as an EF-2, with winds of between 179 and 218 km/h, after it struck at about 5:30 p.m. The national disaster agency SENAPRED declared a red alert for the town in the O’Higgins region.
More than 70 homes were damaged, mostly by roofs being torn off, as well as a school gym, officials said, and one person suffered a minor injury. A day later, Housing Minister Iván Poduje visited the town, where 92 damaged homes had been recorded, and said they would be repaired.
