Surfer Swept Across Newport Beach Jetty As Lifeguard Races Into Powerful Waves
Powerful surf crashes against a rock jetty near 56th Street as a surfer is swept across the rocks and struck by another wave in a 30-second video.
A red-and-white “WARNING” sign stands in the foam as the person briefly gets back on their feet before being hit again and disappearing into the whitewater. A blue board flashes through the breaking waves.
A Newport Beach lifeguard in red shorts then runs into the wash carrying a yellow rescue tube and wearing fins. The tube is lost as the lifeguard wades farther out and works toward the person still caught in the break.
Other people and boards can be seen farther offshore, with distant hills visible on the horizon.
The incident occurred Sunday, September 6, 2026, near 56th Street in Newport Beach. The surfer was swept onto the rocks by large surf generated by Tropical Storm / Hurricane Marie, with a 5–10 foot swell and high-surf and coastal-flood advisories continuing through Tuesday.
The surfer stood, jumped back into the water and was uninjured. A Newport Beach lifeguard entered the water immediately with a rescue tube.
Lifeguards posted: “Thankfully, no one was injured. These currents are no joke.”
