Bodycam Shows Officers Yanking Trapped Driver From Burning Jeep Under Downed Power Lines
Police officers pulled a driver from his burning Jeep moments after it crashed into a utility pole in Holbrook, Massachusetts, with his foot pinned under the dashboard as the flames spread.
Body camera footage from Holbrook Police shows an officer running down a dark residential street at about 3:22am on Sunday, October 25. “We got wires down. Pole down,” he says.
A white Jeep has crashed onto a lawn with its front engulfed in flames, while a snapped wooden utility pole leans over the road with power lines hanging low.
The driver is seen in his seat with the door open, but his foot is trapped under the dashboard. “Get out, boss,” an officer tells him. “Guys, I can’t… You’re gonna rip my foot off,” the driver replies. “It’s getting hot.”
“It’s stuck guys. It’s his foot,” the officer says. The officers push the driver’s leg back in and twist his foot, before one shouts “Just pull it, just yank it” and drags him out by the leg, both falling onto the grass. Officers then pull him away by his clothes, under the low wires. “Driver’s out. Driver’s out,” an officer says over the radio.
Holbrook Police said Sgt. Martin Faherty and Officers Jonathan O’Brien and Matthew Richards responded to Pine Street at around 3:20am and freed the driver within about a minute of arriving. His foot and sneaker had caught fire. O’Brien suffered minor burns to his fingers.
The driver, a 37-year-old Holbrook man, was taken to South Shore Hospital in Weymouth with injuries believed to be non-life-threatening. Police said the Jeep left the road, hit a utility pole and a tree and crashed into a retaining wall near 206 Pine St. They are seeking a summons charging him with operating under the influence of liquor (second offense), negligent operation, a marked lanes violation and speeding.
