Supporters of Brazil’s President Lula Pack Streets of Bolsonaro Stronghold
Crowds of Lula supporters waving red flags packed the streets of Maringá, a city in Paraná state that voted heavily for his right-wing rival, on Sunday night, October 25, to celebrate his re-election.
The footage shows long lines of cars with hazard lights flashing along a tree-lined avenue, while hundreds of people in red shirts cheer and wave flags at a crossroads and motorcycle police steer through the crowd. “I was at the motorcade earlier with my boyfriend and it was packed everywhere,” wrote the X user who filmed it.
The scenes stood out in a city where Flávio Bolsonaro took about 67 percent of the second-round vote, according to electoral court figures.
Nationally, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won re-election with 51.79 percent of the valid votes, against 48.21 percent for Bolsonaro.
