Sea of Protesters Floods Paris Tram Tracks as Marchers Climb Shelter Roof Chanting 'Anti-Capitalist!'
Paris, France – A huge crowd of protesters filled the tram tracks at Porte de Montreuil in eastern Paris on Saturday, October 31, during a march against the rising cost of living.
Francisco Guerrier filmed the march from above. A dense crowd walked along the tracks toward the camera, with drums beating and protesters chanting "Anti, anti, anticapitaliste!" (Anti, anti, anti-capitalist!).
Several people stood on the roof of the Porte de Montreuil tram shelter, one of them wearing a red Phrygian cap. A sign on the shelter roof read "If you love a fight, beat the cops", while another in the crowd read "The resignation – those who stay silent are complicit".
In a second clip, the crowd marched away from the camera under red and yellow union flags and black flags, to the sound of whistles and a megaphone. Signs read "Hands off my pension", "As long as there are cops, there will be no peace" and "The danse macabre", with drawings of riot police.
The authorised Paris march started at Porte de Bagnolet and followed the boulevards around the eastern edge of the city to Porte de Charenton, after France's top administrative court banned the planned route from Bastille to Nation.
Most of the march was calm, but clashes broke out between police and protesters when it reached Porte de Charenton, French media reported.
Paris police counted 70,000 protesters in the capital. Organisers said 200,000 marched in Paris and close to half a million across France.
