Scorching Heat Melts Road Surface Near Bilbao As 39C Temperatures Strike

Video filmed by X user Euskadi Meteo shows black flip-flops pressing into dark asphalt that has softened into a sticky and deformable surface under intense heat.

The footage captures footprints, ripples, and small pieces of debris embedded in the road as the person walks forward. The asphalt appears soft enough to retain the marks left behind.

The camera follows a rural road stretching ahead through green hills, trees, fields, and clear skies. Parts of the surface look glossy and pliable, with visible deformation caused by foot traffic.

The recording was made at around 18:00 on June 23, 2026, in Aiara, approximately 30 kilometers from Bilbao, where temperatures reached 39°C.

The video illustrates the effects of the extreme heat affecting the area. Spain is experiencing a major early-summer heatwave, with parts of the Basque region enduring prolonged high temperatures.

The intense heat has softened road surfaces, increased fire danger, and placed pressure on infrastructure. Local meteorologists and authorities have issued warnings as a heat dome from North Africa affects the Iberian Peninsula, demonstrating how extreme temperatures can disrupt everyday life even on quiet country roads.
