Pounding Surf and Coastal Flooding Swamp Daytona Beach Streets
Pounding surf swallowed the beach and seawater spilled into the streets of Daytona Beach on Monday, October 26, as high winds and rough seas lashed Florida’s Atlantic coast.
Footage released by the City of Daytona Beach shows grey waves rolling right up to the base of the oceanfront hotels and crashing around the pilings of the pier, while nearby intersections sit under sheets of water beside traffic lights and storefronts.
A coastal flood warning remained in effect, with minor to moderate flooding possible, especially around high tide, the city said. High wind and high surf advisories were also in force.
Officials urged people to stay out of the ocean because of dangerous rip currents and never to drive through flooded streets, warning that the conditions were expected to last until 2 a.m. on Thursday, October 29.
