Passengers Evacuated as Fire Burns Under Mexico City Metro
Crowds of passengers streamed out beneath an elevated Metro line as fire burned along the underside of the viaduct near Velódromo station in Mexico City.
X user Iván Gutiérrez filmed the scene on the night of October 20. The footage shows orange flames licking along the concrete structure above, then crowds of people walking away along the path under the elevated tracks.
The Metro said it was handling a fire between Velódromo and Ciudad Deportiva stations on Line 9 and let passengers off at earlier stations as a precaution. Service between Chabacano and Pantitlán was suspended, closing six stations, and city buses were brought in to move stranded riders.
Fire chief Juan Manuel Pérez Cova said trash was burning under the bridge in the Jardín Balbuena neighborhood. Metro director Adrián Rubalcava said the fire reached the tracks and damaged fiber-optic and high-voltage cables. Full service resumed on the morning of October 21.
