Norte Fire Flames Crest Ridge Above San Juan Capistrano Homes

A wall of flames crested a ridge above a San Juan Capistrano neighborhood as the Norte Fire pushed thick black smoke over homes on October 16, 2026.

X user Kaz filmed the scene from their living room and shared it that afternoon. The video shows a long line of orange flames burning along the hilltops and dipping into a ravine. A dense column of dark smoke rises above it and fills the sky. Dry brush covers the slope between the fire and a row of large houses below, and a woman can be heard swearing in shock off camera.

The fire broke out at about 11:30 a.m. near Portico Del Norte in San Clemente and spread into San Juan Capistrano, fueled by dry brush and Santa Ana winds. By the afternoon, it had burned 465 acres with no containment, according to fire officials.

The Orange County Fire Authority said four homes on Via La Mirada in San Juan Capistrano were impacted. Mandatory evacuation orders were issued for parts of both cities.
