Muddy Floodwaters Turn New Mexico Roads Into Raging Rivers
Fast-moving muddy floodwaters turned roads into raging rivers as heavy rain caused flooding across Mora County on September 30.
Footage filmed by the Mora County Sheriff’s Office shows a vehicle driving through brown, rushing water along County Road A001. Foam piles against the tires as water cuts across the road and pours into a ditch.
A second clip shows a wall of muddy water striking the vehicle’s side glass. Ahead, New Mexico Highway 94 is covered by a long sheet of water stretching between fields, with a fence line partly submerged in the current.
The sheriff’s office closed Highway 94 between mile posts 14 and 16, along with several county roads. A section of County Road A003 was also washed out.
Officials warned drivers not to cross flooded roads or go around barricades. The National Guard and county fire crews were in the area, while damage was reported mainly to fields and roads.
