Lava Fountains Burst From Kīlauea as Episode 56 Begins
Hawaii, United States – Bright red lava fountains burst from Kīlauea's summit vent as the volcano began another episode of eruptive activity.
Video released by the US Geological Survey on Thursday, November 5, shows lava surging above the vent and spreading across the surrounding dark crater surface as gas rises behind it.
The agency said episode 56 began that day following several days of intermittent spattering, low fountains and lava flows. It estimated the fountains were about 300 feet above the vent at the time of its update, with the possibility of growing taller.
The activity was within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. The agency warned that winds could carry volcanic gas and material towards the southwest.
