Kilauea Volcano Erupts In Towering Lava Fountain As Halemaumau Crater Lights Up Hawaii Skies

Video filmed by X user John W. Ratcliff shows a powerful lava fountain erupting from the Halemaʻumaʻu crater at Kīlauea volcano, sending a towering column of bright red-orange molten rock into the sky.

Thick dark smoke and ash rise above the crater as glowing lava splashes and flows down the sides of the vent, creating a dramatic and intense volcanic display.

In the foreground, spectators stand on a rocky overlook behind a rope barrier, watching the eruption with backpacks and cameras as they observe the active crater below.

Green vegetation frames part of the view, while the wide crater floor stretches out beneath distant mountains and a partly cloudy sky.

The footage captures the peak of Episode 49 in the ongoing summit eruption of Kīlauea on June 14, 2026. The activity began at 9:36 a.m. HST from the north vent and continued for around 7.5 hours before stopping at 5:05 p.m. HST.

The eruption produced high lava fountains, covered large parts of the crater floor with fresh lava, and generated a plume reaching thousands of feet into the atmosphere.

The activity remained within closed areas of Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park, allowing safe viewing from designated overlooks.

Kīlauea has been in an episodic fountaining phase since late 2024, with this event standing out as one of the most powerful in the ongoing sequence.
