Homes And Cars Surrounded By Floodwater As High Tide Swamps Hampton Roads
Homes and cars were surrounded by brown floodwater Wednesday evening as an unusually high tide pushed water into low-lying residential streets.
Drone footage shows gray two-story houses and brick bungalows standing in flooded streets, with cars sitting in water up to their doors and a white sedan parked in a flooded driveway.
People could be seen walking through ankle-to-knee-deep water while streetlights and house lights remained on beneath an overcast sky. A body of water was visible at the far end of one street.
The flooding came as a nor’easter off the Mid-Atlantic pushed tides well above normal. The National Weather Service in Wakefield maintained a coastal flood warning for Hampton Roads, including Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, Hampton, Poquoson and Suffolk.
Officials warned of 2 to 3 feet of inundation above ground in vulnerable areas. The Wednesday evening high tide at Sewells Point in Hampton Roads was around 7:46 p.m.
Major tidal flooding continued through several cycles into Thursday and Friday, with road closures reported inland from the waterfront.
