Hail and Wind Lash Phoenix Apartments in Rare Desert Storm

Sheets of rain and hail lashed a Phoenix apartment complex on Wednesday afternoon as a rare and violent storm tore across the desert city.

X user SouthwestWX filmed the scene from a porch on October 21. Hail bounces off the railing and parked cars as wind-driven rain swallows the buildings across the lot.

The National Weather Service warned of golf ball-sized hail and 60 mph wind gusts across Maricopa County. In north Phoenix, near 19th Avenue and Peoria Avenue, hail shattered apartment windows, punched holes in windshields and dented cars, while strong winds toppled trees onto vehicles.

More than 2,400 APS customers and nearly 2,000 SRP customers lost power. No injuries were reported.
