Strong winds whipped the tall palm trees along St. Petersburg’s downtown waterfront on Saturday night, October 17, as a strong fall cold front swept across Tampa Bay and ushered in a windy stretch for Florida’s Gulf Coast.

Local storm chaser Navin Singh filmed the scene around 9 p.m. near Vinoy Park and North Shore Park. Four towering, slender palms sway and bend in the gusts, their fronds pushed sideways while the wind roars over the microphone, and the city lights glow across the dark bay beneath a heavy overcast sky. Speaking over the footage, Singh points out that only a few of the area’s well-known tall palms are still standing, saying the rest were blown away by Hurricanes Helene and Milton two years ago. He also mentions a developing system off the East Coast that is helping to drive the wind.

The front brought showers and thunderstorms to the Tampa Bay area through Saturday before clearing late in the evening. Forecasters said the bigger impact would be a long spell of gusty northeast winds, caused by a tight pressure gradient between strong high pressure building over the eastern United States and an area of low pressure developing off the Carolinas. The National Weather Service forecast northeast winds of 20 to 25 knots with gusts of up to 30 knots over the bay and nearby Gulf waters, with seas of 5 to 7 feet, occasionally reaching 9 feet, and said bay and inland waters would be rough.

A Small Craft Advisory was put in place from Saturday evening through early Tuesday for Tampa Bay and the coastal waters from Tarpon Springs to Bonita Beach, and beachgoers were warned about rip currents. Behind the front, drier and less humid air moved in, bringing mostly sunny skies and temperatures slightly below normal for the season, while the breezy conditions were expected to last well into the week.
