Furious Crowd Besieges Spain’s Transport Ministry Demanding Answers Over Train Disaster
Hundreds of angry protesters massed outside Spain’s Ministry of Transport in Madrid on Wednesday evening, October 28, hours after a collision between two high-speed trains near Urda, in Toledo province, killed at least 68 people.
X user J. Jota filmed the crowd outside the ministry as the protest got under way. “Protest at the Ministry of Transport right now,” the filmer wrote.
The crash happened at 8:53 a.m., when a Renfe AVE train carrying 378 passengers ran into the back of an Iryo train that had stopped on the line, national broadcaster RTVE reported. Early theories point to human error after a computer fault knocked out the signalling system.
The protest, called by far-right groups, targeted Transport Minister Óscar Puente and Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, and ended in clashes with riot police later that night.
