Floodwater Swallows Plaza As Heavy Rain Hits Guatemala
Heavy overnight rain flooded a plaza in El Jícaro, prompting local authorities to monitor the situation as rain-related incidents were reported in other parts of Guatemala.
Footage recorded overnight shows floodwater covering the plaza in the municipal center, with rain continuing to fall.
Guatemala’s disaster management agency, CONRED, was monitoring the flooding after rainfall in the preceding hours, according to information published on October 8. The municipal risk office for El Progreso was also monitoring the situation.
Other incidents reported that night included flooding in the Santa Elena neighborhood of Salamá, Baja Verapaz, where a stream overflowed and blocked vehicles; a fallen tree at La Arenera in Río Hondo, Zacapa; and a landslide in Tecpán, Chimaltenango, where municipal crews used machinery.
No flood depth, number of affected homes or injury total was reported for El Jícaro.
