Early Snow Turns Idaho Weather Office Into Brief Winter Wonderland

Snow fell over the National Weather Service office in Pocatello on the morning of October 12, as a cold storm brought the first snow of the season to parts of eastern Idaho.

Footage released by the National Weather Service in Pocatello shows large flakes blowing sideways under a parking lot light before dawn, with a light layer of snow settling on a parked SUV and the grass nearby. The office said the temperature “dropped 1 more degree and we had a little winter wonderland for a moment at the office this morning.”

A weather service employee reported about 0.8 inches of snow just outside Pocatello at 7:30 a.m. local time, and the forecast for the area that day called for up to 2 inches. Freeze warnings and frost advisories were in effect early Monday for Pocatello, Idaho Falls, Rexburg, Blackfoot and other communities across the region, with temperatures expected to fall to between 30 and 33 degrees.

The storm had already dropped 1 to 2 inches of snow on mountain passes near the Idaho-Montana border, including the Henrys Lake area, the day before.
