Connecticut Streets Swallowed By Floodwater After 7-Inch Rain Bomb
A slow-moving rain bomb dumped roughly 6–7.2 inches of rain on Westport on Sunday morning, sending Saugatuck River tributaries over their banks within hours.
Brown floodwater covered streets and yards across Greens Farms, Hillendale and Center Street, Sturges Highway and Wilton Road. Fast-moving water also overwhelmed low-lying streets and affected downtown and Route 1 businesses.
Peak rainfall rates reached 3–4 inches per hour. The flooding submerged roads and properties as water surged through residential and commercial areas.
The Westport Fire Department logged about 120–130 flood calls, rescued 13 people from stranded vehicles and helped evacuate additional residents from homes. No fatalities were reported.
Jesup Road at Imperial Avenue was among the hardest-hit areas. Cleanup and damage self-reporting continued on September 14 as officials assessed FEMA eligibility.
