Cádiz Housing Protesters Set Up Overnight Camp After Rally Of More Than 900
Housing protesters set up an overnight camp in a city square after more than 900 people joined a rally calling for changes to housing policy.
Video filmed by X user María Peñalver/Cadiz Tenants Union shows orange tents and a blue-and-yellow Cádiz canopy set up on the cobbles of Plaza del Palillero. People sit on benches and folding chairs while a speaker stands beneath the canopy.
The banners at the camp called for a Cádiz where people can live, demanded “No People Without Homes, No Homes Without People,” declared that housing is costing people their lives, and called for a Cádiz for its residents.
According to the Cádiz Tenants’ Union, the assembly voted to remain overnight in El Palillero, with about 40 people sleeping at the camp.
The protest followed the eviction of 87-year-old Maricarmen from her Madrid home after she had lived in the same apartment for decades.
Campaigners are calling for a proposed “Maricarmen Royal Decree” that would establish indefinite leases, freeze rents and ban evictions without alternative housing.
The Cádiz camp is separate from the larger encampment at Puerta del Sol.
