A young Florida panther kitten was rescued after wildlife biologists intervened during a denning situation that showed signs of distress in early 2026.

After a female Florida panther was fitted with a radio collar during the 2026 capture season, GPS tracking data showed she had entered a den. Biologists from the FWC and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service confirmed the location and documented a single kitten inside.

Ongoing monitoring later showed the mother returning to the den and caring for the kitten as expected.

However, over time, researchers observed that the mother stopped returning. After two weeks without any return visits, the kitten was found to be significantly underweight, weighing less than 3 pounds, and carrying a high parasite load.

Officials determined that intervention was necessary to protect the animal’s survival.

In March 2026, the 2-month-old female kitten, identified as K528, was carefully removed from the den and transported to Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens for medical treatment and supportive care.

Wildlife biologists noted that tracking collared panthers provides important insight into reproduction, survival, and overall population health. The monitoring also allows experts to identify situations where intervention may be required to give vulnerable kittens a chance to survive.
