Snow Blankets Colorado's High Peaks as Avalanche Experts Warn Slopes Could Slide
Weston Pass, United States – Snow blanketed the high peaks of Colorado's Mosquito Range as avalanche forecasters warned that the steep slopes could already produce avalanches.
Footage filmed by Jason Konigsberg, a forecaster with the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, shows the view from about 13,300 feet near Weston Pass on Tuesday, November 3, with sunlit, snow-covered ridges and rocky summits under a blue sky.
He found that north- to east-facing slopes above about 12,800 feet had enough snow cover to produce avalanches, while there was essentially no snow below 12,000 feet.
"With the recent warm weather and high snowlines, there is high uncertainty in the structure of the above treeline snowpack," he wrote. "We are unsure if there are buried faceted layers near the ground, under denser slabs."
