LEGO Bandit Arrested After U-Haul Chase Over $3,000 In Stolen Sets
Nassau County detectives arrested Ronald Lorne Tipton, known as the “LEGO Bandit,” after an investigation into an organized retail-theft operation involving more than $20,000 in stolen merchandise across Northeast Florida.
Investigators said Tipton targeted expensive LEGO sets, taking them from a Target in Yulee on Aug. 18, Aug. 26 and Sept. 12. The combined losses from those thefts were about $3,800.
On Sept. 15, investigators said Tipton entered the Walmart on State Road 200, selected 12 LEGO sets and tried to leave without paying. When confronted by asset protection, he ran from the store and got into a U-Haul.
A Nassau County detective later spotted the truck on a service road. As the detective tried to open the driver’s door, Tipton allegedly drove away and struck the detective’s left arm with the door.
A pursuit followed as Tipton drove toward Sadler Road, entering the Beach Diner and CVS parking lots. A Nassau County deputy eventually pinned the U-Haul against a tree with a patrol vehicle. Fernandina Beach police helped arrest Tipton and Jessica Underwood.
Authorities said suspected methamphetamine, crack cocaine and fentanyl were also recovered from the U-Haul.
Sheriff Bill Leeper said the investigation showed how evidence from one theft can uncover a larger operation.
“What may start as a single retail theft can sometimes uncover something much bigger,” Leeper said. “Our detectives followed the evidence, connected the dots and worked with our law enforcement partners to put a suspect involved in these thefts behind bars.”
Tipton faces charges including aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, aggravated fleeing with injury or damage, coordinating others in retail theft over $3,000, dealing in stolen property, possession of controlled substances and driving under the influence.
