Frenzied Fans Camp Overnight to Grab First Foldable iPhone
Shoppers lined the upper walkway of the Mall of Georgia before dawn on Friday, October 23, as Apple’s first foldable phone, the iPhone Duo, went on sale.
X user Kyle filmed the queue snaking along the railing, with some people sitting on the floor and in folding chairs looking at their phones while others stood waiting. “Got here at 5:45 AM and there was already a line. Some people have been waiting since 6 PM yesterday,” Kyle wrote, adding, “I think the iPhone Duo is going to be the biggest in-person iPhone launch in YEARS.”
Lines formed at Apple stores around the world for the device, which costs about $2,000. Apple had warned that walk-in stock would be limited because of what it called “extraordinary” pre-order demand, and delivery dates for online orders slipped to late January within minutes of pre-orders opening a week earlier.
Apple CEO John Ternus greeted customers at the company’s store in Austin, Texas, while marketing chief Greg Joswiak opened the doors at Apple Fifth Avenue in New York City. Some stores sold out of their launch-day walk-in supply within hours.
