Fireworks Fired From Moving SUV Create Dangerous Scene On Busy U.S. Highway

On July 4, 2026, the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office Air Unit spotted a vehicle launching fireworks from the passenger window while traveling on Interstate 95.

The fireworks were observed landing in the median and traffic lanes as vehicles passed on the highway, leading to a law enforcement response.

Patrol deputies located the silver SUV and stopped the vehicle. The occupants initially denied involvement until deputies informed them the activity had been captured on camera.

Aerial infrared footage showed the SUV traveling southbound on I-95 with bright flashes from objects being ejected from the passenger side and landing near traffic lanes.

The passenger was arrested and charged with shooting a deadly missile from a moving vehicle.

Officials reminded the public that fireworks should be handled safely and responsibly, including using them only from a hard surface and keeping a safe distance from people and other objects.
