An emu escaped from a local petting zoo Saturday, prompting a police chase involving multiple officers and a drone.

The Town of Ramapo Police Department said officers were called after “an emu decided to make a break for it from a local petting zoo.” Officers located the “feathered fugitive,” but said convincing the bird that its adventure was over “took a little teamwork.”

The department’s Drone as First Responder tracked the Australian bird from the sky as officers pursued it and worked to bring it under control.

Police joked, “We don’t know why the chicken crossed the road, but the emu crossed the road because Sgt. Anton didn’t give it an option.”

The emu was safely escorted back to the petting zoo, with officers making clear that its “unauthorized tour of Ramapo was officially over.”

Police said there were “no injuries, no citations and no word yet on whether it plans to escape again.”
