Driver Gives Cop A Lift During Foot Chase After Suspected Drug Dealer Flees Traffic Stop

A passing driver helped a police officer continue chasing a suspected drug dealer after the man abandoned his car and fled into woodland on September 25.

PC Ford had stopped the vehicle shortly before 4 p.m. after it went through a red traffic light. The officer noticed a strong smell of cannabis coming from inside and tried to obtain the driver’s details, but the man suddenly ran away.

The suspect abandoned his vehicle and fled into woodland off Bestwood Road. As PC Ford emerged from bushes during the pursuit, a passing motorist stopped to help.

“Am I all right to jump in?” the officer asked before climbing into the back seat of the car to continue the chase.

Another member of the public helped detain the suspect until additional police support arrived.

Police recovered a large black bag containing a large quantity of cannabis from the woodland. A search of a property in Bestwood also uncovered thousands of pounds in cash.

A 22-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply cannabis, driving without due care and attention, driving on a road other than a motorway, failing to comply with a red traffic light and criminal damage.

He has since been released on bail while the investigation continues.
