Body camera footage captures a 6-year-old student who shot his teacher, Abby Zwerner, telling police, “I don’t care about going to jail, bitch,” in the aftermath of the shooting at Richneck Elementary School on January 6, 2023.

The footage, shown to jurors during Zwerner’s $40 million civil lawsuit against school officials, captures paramedics working to save the teacher’s life and the immediate response inside the school.

The boy also tells officers, “My mom had that. I stole that from my mom,” when asked about the gun. In other exchanges, he swears at officers and an employee and says he does not care if police call for backup.

Zwerner was shot in the left hand and upper left chest. The bullet broke bones and punctured a lung. Despite her injuries, she ushered her first-grade students into the hallway before collapsing in the school office.

The lawsuit alleges that former assistant principal Ebony Parker was warned the student might have a weapon but failed to take appropriate action. The claims are part of the civil proceedings.

The boy told authorities he retrieved his mother’s 9mm handgun from a purse on top of a dresser, concealed it in his backpack and then his pocket, and brought it to school. Investigators said they never found a trigger lock, despite his mother initially telling them the gun had been secured with one.

The boy’s mother, Deja Taylor, was sentenced to two years in state prison for felony child neglect and separately received a 21-month federal sentence for using marijuana while possessing a firearm. She pleaded guilty to both charges.
