School Bus Rolls Onto Median Barrier In Indianapolis Crash With Police Pickup
A school bus carrying 24 students and three adults rolled onto a concrete median barrier Tuesday morning, September 29, after a crash on northbound I-465, where an Indiana State Police pickup also struck the wall.
The bus, numbered 139, came to rest on its side against the barrier, with its wheels in the air and debris scattered across the ramp. An Indianapolis Fire Department rescue truck was parked beside the wreck, while a marked police car and an officer were visible on the opposite roadway.
The students were fifth graders from Creston Intermediate and Middle School in the Metropolitan School District of Warren Township. All students were accounted for, and those involved were taken for medical evaluation and to meet their families.
Eight children and three adults were initially taken to hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. Indianapolis Fire Department later said one child was in serious condition while seven of the eight children transported by ambulance were stable.
Two on-duty state troopers in the pickup were also taken to hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. IFD declared the crash a mass-casualty incident.
Investigators were still determining the cause. Dashcam footage reportedly showed a third vehicle entering northbound I-465 from Washington Street shortly before the crash, and investigators were looking for that driver.
