Nishi-Izu, Japan – A massive red tide outbreak has transformed the coastal waters of Nishi-Izu into a vast reddish-brown expanse, creating an eerie and almost apocalyptic scene.

Video filmed by X user フンコロ captures the shocking scale of the environmental event along the coast of West Izu. The footage pans across the shoreline and ocean surface, revealing discolored water stretching across a large area as far as the eye can see.

The harmful algal bloom turned the sea into a vivid red-brown color, dramatically altering the appearance of the coastline across the Izu Peninsula.

Posted on May 20, 2026, the footage carried the caption: “Nishi-Izu has become a red tide hell.”

Locals said the outbreak was so severe that the water could glow at night with bioluminescence produced by the plankton.

The video provides raw, on-the-ground images of the red tide event affecting the region.
