Nantes Fans Storm Pitch As Club’s Relegation Sparks Chaotic Ligue 1 Scenes

Chaotic scenes erupted at Stade de la Beaujoire in Nantes on May 17, 2026, when supporters invaded the pitch during the Ligue 1 match between FC Nantes and Toulouse.

The handheld video, filmed from the stands by X user bloody (@bloodySuSu), shows thick black and gray smoke from several flares spreading across the field near the goal as dozens of Brigade Loire ultras climb over advertising hoardings and run onto the grass.

Players wearing yellow Nantes kits and white Toulouse kits scatter toward the center circle while stewards in orange vests and security personnel rush onto the field to intervene. The camera pans shakily across the packed stadium, capturing the scale of the invasion with the crowded Tribune Loire and stadium roof visible in the background.

The match, which was still 0-0 in the 22nd minute, was immediately stopped and later abandoned for safety reasons after supporters breached barriers and ignited pyrotechnics.

FC Nantes had already been mathematically relegated to Ligue 2 before kick-off. According to the description, the invasion was carried out as a protest against the club’s ownership and management after a dismal season.

France’s Minister of Sports condemned the events as “unacceptable,” while anti-riot police deployed tear gas to clear the pitch.

The footage rapidly spread online as one of the clearest inside-stadium views of the disruption that brought an end to Nantes’ 13-year stay in the top division.
