Massive Grand Finale Ends Tokyo Bay Fireworks Festival Revival
Wave after wave of gold, red and green shells filled the night sky over Tokyo Bay on Saturday, October 24, as the Tokyo Bay Grand Fireworks Festival reached its grand finale after 11 years away.
X user Shinji filmed the closing barrage from a waterfront viewing area, as spectators in the foreground held up their phones and bright bursts flashed through drifting smoke above the city skyline. The show ended with a curtain of golden sparks raining down over the water.
“Tokyo Bay Grand Fireworks Festival grand finale!” the filmer wrote.
About 12,000 fireworks were launched from the water off Harumi Pier between 5:30 p.m. and 7 p.m., watched by about 110,000 ticket holders. Organisers went ahead despite the rain forecast and banned umbrellas at viewing areas.
The festival, last held in 2015, was revived by Tokyo’s Chuo and Minato wards to mark their 80th anniversaries, and moved from August to October to avoid extreme heat and sudden storms.
